Where we have too much of a good thing is in terms of RAC and underneath threats. Not that two top underneath threats is too much, mind you, but when you don't have any real speed threat you're gonna have defenses rolled up tight and a cluttered field for targets.
This offense lacks a few key things that are keeping it from that top productive output...
1. Consistent pass protection. Where the Rams are deficient is in the free runs into the backfield and blindside security, both of which turn a QB like Stafford into a football dispenser. This is not to exempt Stafford from his poor play btw. He needs to play a lot better. But structurally the protections improving should be the top priority and LT is glaring.
2. Stretching the field. Nobody fears Tutu. His miniscule catch radius and inconsistency are not ever going to dictate how defenses call it. Rams have nobody who can do this. This is a very big need for the roster.
3. Run game balance. What is driving our annual failure in maintaining run game balance is the lack of quality in the backfield. This is one of Snead's yearly failures in his roster building. We started to see it working with Williams, got a brief glimpse of what it looks like before he of course got hurt. It's not a problem to take a shot on a RB with red flags in round 6. But when you are filling a ton of holes and you miss on that gamble then you come up short during the season when you need that RB. This is not to say Evans might not figure things out. Nobody knows if he can do it. But when I see us bringing back the ghosts of backfield failure past in guys like Henderson the blame lies on one person: Les Snead.
So please excuse my wordiness, and back to the WR group speed is the focus. Speed is what the Rams are looking for in this draft.
