As MJD said: OL players work lessand wear down the D line with run blocking. A run play gives the QB a breather - hand it off, don't take a hit, come back to the next play refreshed. the O line finishes the game stronger with a good mix of run plays. The effects are cumulative.
And I note that there tends to be fewer O line ankle and lower leg injuries of run plays.
Generally, if your RBis getting 3 toi 4 yards a popearly, the longer runs will come later.
I'd say 75% of theproblem with the run game is playcalling. The other 25% is part RB talent but mostly execution from lack of in-game snaps to get in sync for better execution.
