I had hoped otherwise when Akers came to camp, buffed out and smiling. Could be, I hoped, he's had an epiphany or done some real soul searching and turned his life around. I also saw the flip side of that coin. He's so obsessively self-focused that it's another "Look at me" moment and it's still all about him. I posted last year that Akers is a case of classic Narcissism - not in the popular sense, but in the clinical sense. He looked increasingly disgruntled as the game went on last week, even when McVay chose to let him run in that walk-in TD at the end.

McVay has done all he can - done his very best to understand, motivate and grow this young man, bring this young player into the team. "Into" is the operative word here; within the team, Akers could have a role. Operating in his own orbit outside it, there can only be so much accomidation.

He's stalemated his career at this point. Who'd want to take a chance on him?

I hope, still, for his own sake, that he gets it turned around.

As far as his future with the Rams is concerned, though, enough of the team's energy, resources, and attention have been devoted to him. From here on out any coddling or puttig up with bad behavior or bad attitude is a distraction and a downer to the team effort. He had his chance to step up.
