We don't know what's going on behind closed doors.
We do know that Akers wants to be not only the starter, but the premier running back. We also know that McVay is performance oriented, full team "all in" oriented, and wants players that not only accept, but wholeartedly commit to their role on the team and the team's culture.
This game is a critical game, in which the team faces an uphill battle against formitable odds and must make a statement.
Akers has been on a short leash, "prove it" stance with a head coach who applauds and magnifies his every positive achievement. McVay has done all he can to reinforce and build Cam up. With all that he invested in Akers, I imagine McVay had a "last straw" incident that he had to act upon - that he had to quell any negativity coming from Akers as he was trying to build a mindset within his players. He also quite possibly had to send a message to the rest of the team. He really means it when he says we not me.
