While I loved the Bennett pick and see him as a very good backup in the future I agree that having a true vet QB available for game one is a very good idea. I don't know what a guy like Carson Wentz would think about backing up Stafford for a season while Bennett learns. Right now, this former first rounder has no job so he might pick up his phone.
It's hard to argue the writer's potential 53, but McVay and Snead both stress that there are many factors in the squad besides just keeping the best 53. For instance, who is returning kicks and punts? Who might be the best placekick holder? Who can tackle on special teams? Are you going to run 11 or 12 the most?
Who can play more than one position? Who is healthy? Who else is available on the waiver wire or through trade? How much does every player cost against the cap? Who makes smart plays? Who is consistent? How do they match up against quality opponents? For instance, the Niners' front 7 defense. How do we get them blocked? Where are these guys in their contracts? Are we SB contenders or rebuilding? It could be that the initial cutdown and the 53 who finish game 17 are very different. We have a big practice squad and can now promote guys from it. Good players from other teams will get released. There's still free agents out there who are solid players.
