yes he was held in high regard ... but being honest he was 2-7 in the postseason, both wins in 1972 ...
Knox was 3-5...neither one good so Allen was no Shula or Noll coming in, guys who "knew how"

Also keep in mind that Allen was never hired again until the USFL came calling, so the fact he became intolerable might be correct. In the end, the Rams had opportunities for Bill Walsh, Don Coryell & Dan Reeves and IMHO, those would have been better options then Ray Malavasi, taking nothing away from Ray with the 1979 run.
