Vic Fangio : Top 5 Reasons That Makes His Defense So Special

In this video, learn what makes a Vic Fangio defense so special. Learn how he puts his players in the best positions to succeed, and how they use their athleticism to create turnovers.

Now that it's official and that Vic Fangio will indeed be the new defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins

I felt I should take the time and answer some of the questions I've be en getting about why Fangio is such a big deal.

As you have probably heard, Fangio will be the NFL’s highest-paid defensive coordinator at a reported $.5 Million per year.

That's a lot of dead presidents for a coordinator.

So what makes Fangio worth that kind of money?

Here's 5 reasons Fangio might be worth that kind of money.

1. Fangio’s defense focuses on limiting explosive plays by playing heavy zone coverage and tricking teams into running the ball when it looks advantageous but really isn’t.

2. Fangio’s defenses don’t blitz a lot either. His Denver defenses never finished higher than 13th in the NFL in blitz rate, according to Sports Info Solutions.

3. The idea is to limit explosive passing plays, force teams to run the football and then win with four pass rushers up front.

Time for Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips to feast.

4. Fangio drives offenses crazy by utilizing a lot of post-snap movement.

This is a heavy contrast to Miami’s defense under Josh Boyer, which lived in man coverage, blitzed excessively and rarely rotated safeties post-snap.

5.Boyer’s defense wanted to overwhelm opposing offenses with sheer pressure.

Fangio’s defense wants to outsmart opposing offenses with schemes.

It's very hard to put Fangio's defensive schemes into a short video for most fans to understand.

But here's a quick breakdown on what you can expect to see:

Fangio's arrival in Miami should mean plenty of personnel and scheme changes.

The Dolphins committed hard to their previous defensive style, so the transformation won’t happen overnight.

Fangio has proven without a doubt that his ability to scheme is a differentiator between his defenses and other defenses.

This past season it often looked like teams figured out quickly that Miami was vulnerable to the and dunk.

Hard to believe that in the pre-season all the pundits laughed at Tua Tagovailoa and only considered him a and dunker.

I guess the and dunk is now a viable offensive strategy. Go figure!

But I digress…

Miami’s blitz-happy approach under Josh Boyer was an exploitable defense.

It put the injured Miami Dolphins secondary in bad positions.

Obviously, guys like Jevon Holland and Xavien Howard are probably really pumped to play under Vic Fangio's defensive disguises and schemes.

You may be wondering as earlier I said Vic Fangio might be worth the $4.5 million dollars the Dolphins are paying him.

That's because we'll have to see. We're all optimistic, but the proof will need to be seen quickly.

Why? Because the 2023 Dolphins are facing one of the toughest schedules in the league.

#HelmetHornsMatter

“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.

“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
