Click-bait generates readership (I get sucked into it all the time) and word count + deadlines = vacuous content.

We're stuck with it until the games begin.

Meanwhile, where are the so-called human interest stories we used to read? The decline and virtual disappearance of them seems a societal thing to me, a by-product of the disconnect and disengagement produced by technology and social divisiveness at every level. Human beings are hard-wired to connect with each other. Life is with people, not laptops and phones.
