And I "think" that it means... McVay, I do not believe, drafts a QB whose peak is a solid backup, not that early anyway... I think McVay sees him as a potential starter because if not he's not a Ram. IOW... McVay sees a lot more in him than how I'm reading the board consensus regarding his potential.
So as shocked as I was by the pick Bennett is for me, by far, the most intriguing pick the Rams made this year. That he will backup Stafford this year, and most likely next? Duh! But that doesn't in the least lead me to think the Ram's are of the opinion that a 'starting QB' is a need in the next couple of years. I think they believe they just drafted the next starter.
You may be right. In fact, I think Snead actually hinted at that, however inadvertently (and inarticulately, as usual). In discussing Bennett's height, he compared him to Drew Brees and stated that Brees always had two massive guards to keep the pocket clean in front of him so he always had room to step up. Having just drafted Avila, who fits that profile, that would suggest that that was part of the calculation in drafting Avila. And you don't use premium draft picks with your backup QB in mind.
