The Rams offense was on-tracked by acquisition of a power back element in midseason moves. In 2018 it was CJ Anderson and here's his first game highlights with the Rams offensive unit that had been stifled by the stacked fronts designed to stop the outside zone. After this game the offense rolled:
In 2022 it was Sony Michel, who came in and settled down our offensive backfield precisely how CJ had done earlier, with power threat of run and good solid pass blocking. Here's his highlights which start after 35 seconds of BS:
Watching both highlight reels one would be hard pressed to see that prior to these we had little run game to speak of. Also it is clear as day that this offense, when it has a legit run threat, is extremely difficult to stop. All the greatest WCO attacks, in fact, have that in common.
Somehow McVay has a blind spot when it comes to this. Because he loves passcatchy backs. So I think Snead has a couple options here...
1. Draft McVay a power back via whatever means is required.
2. Draft McVay an elite back who can do it all.
So in summary I am all for Charbonnet or any other power back they might draft. He would cement this backfield by giving them a legit 2 bell-cow role depth. But sadly I am not sure McVay would prioritize him so we might need to go after a more all-around type who can meet McVay's passcatchy needs like Sean Tucker. There are multiple options that are similar to him too, so not like he's the only one but check out this all-around game and some of these backs will be there when we're on the clock in the midrounds:
