Many thoughts here. Was it really the coaching? Or was it more the blocking? We had guys going down and our OL was different every week for the first 12. We also relied too heavily on passing. So is that McVay's fault or Samples? Akers was coming off an Achilles. Maybe he was fully healthy down the stretch.
Also, running backs need to get into a rhythm and Akers was splitting carries with Hendu.
Maybe the guys line Nseche and Skura who we picked up off the street were better run blockers. I would still love to know what happened with Akers with the non-trade, benching, leaving the team, etc. That led to Hendu getting released and Akers then getting all the carries. Can we trust Akers now? If not, we have KW (a mystery wrapped in an enigma) and our old pal Malcomb Brown. I think we're picking a half back at 36. Hopefully a great one.
Short answer? I think it was a combination of things.
Decimated OL.
Coach Samples was incompetent.
Akers wasn’t yet fully recovered from his Achilles early in the season.
Any one of those was a handicap for the young RB.
