I think they like Jones a lot.
I think they want to run more 5-1 and 6-1 D sets like before BW came on board. This BW move COULD bode well for Rams extending Gaines. IOW, Rams don’t value ILB position as much as other teams. This will permit better pass D than with Bobby starting and hopefully give their pass rush an extra half-second to get to QB.
I loved BW’s intangibles but he is not the LB he once was and it was probably gonna be more pronounced this year.
Finally, I even more suspect that Rams are gonna commit to serious upgrades at Edge and CB this offseason to help offset the loss of BW.
The addition of Lake and Pleasant will likely turbocharge player development in the secondary and make it a team strength. That would obviously help improve Rams pass rush which was weakest link on D last year.
After thinking about this move for 24 hours I can see where Rams might overall be better off and slightly more flexible defensively after this surprising move.
