Maybe more than depth to make a run, you need luck. The 49'ers had a very deep, talented roster - but they didn't have 4 QB's and so were sent packing. The chiefs don't have deep talent at every position - but they have Mahomes, Kelce, and Andy Reid. If Mahomes couldn't have recovered from his ankle injury - nothing else would have mattered.
