IIRC the introduction of sight reads or at least a significant change in the sophistication of sight reads was one of the evolutionary changes McVay implemented a few years into his tenure. Also, I believe, it is part of what got Goff traded. It seems he wasn't able to grow with those changes the way McVay envisioned.
