Road grader olinemen is the pendulum swing from where I’m seeing it. Defenses have invested in stopping spread offenses, so we’re seeing six men in the box a lot.
They way to make defenses pay for that literal downsizing is to run heavy.
Then it becomes a war of roster attrition. I never thought about that till this year. It was clear early in the season that McVay had no answer to flooding zones with DBs and aggressive pass rushes. Since Allen was not cable of moving bodies and our backs were more of a third down situational prototype, McVay had no answers to run heavy. There’s only 53 men in the roster. He couldn’t call anyone off the bench to bulldoze forward for 4 reliable yards enough times to force the defense to play the run.
I think the Rams need to focus on LT and C. They’ve got to find or coach up an LT to elite. Stafford will be a casualty if they don’t.
But more importantly they’ve got to get a road grader at center to plow open huge holes. If the Rams can’t have that, no team will take their run game seriously to the point of changing up their defense. That’s what happened this year. Need to learn from it.
