I'm too lazy to look it up, but it seems like maybe he was our DC for one season? Is that right? Did he have a track record before that? He might have been over-hyped for the Chargers job (was he really the best option). It's not like he had years of high level DC experience. Or did he?
Brandon Staley's first gig as an NFL DC came with the Rams in the 2020 season. He did a great job in leading the defense to the #1 ranking while giving up only 18.5 ppg during the regular season. Unfortunately, the Rams gave up 32 points in the Divisional round of the playoffs that year losing to Green Bay (defense hampered by a one-armed AD). Nevertheless, he parlayed the seasonal performance into the HC position for the Chargers.
Prior to coming over to the Rams, I believe Staley served as LB coach under Vic Fangio in Denver.
I'll leave it up to you to determine if that made him the best option. He clearly was to the Chargers.
