I wonder if McVay could have privately contemplated his self-monitoring rather than doing so publicly. If this has been coming for years I wonder if McVay could have planned to move to the front office with a groomed successor in place like Bill Walsh did. I remember Vermeil openly stating that he planned to leave the Rams as winning organization with a successor in place. It does not sound like it is a consideration to have McVay in the front office with a former assistant as HC now. I don't know if Waldron is ready to be a HC.
