It was blood clots. There was a point in time when I couldn't walk 50 feet without my legs in pain. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed all the time with lower back problems. And then, one night, my foot turned black. And you know the rest.
There's a simple, noninvasive procedure to determine if you have blood clots in your legs. It's no big deal, but I would advise getting it done as a precaution, since you are feeling pain. Numbness is nerves. Pain can be vascular. If it is vascular, there is medication for that. Mine went far too long and the amputation was the only way out.
Keep this in mind. Amputation is a last resort. The docs will try everything else to avoid it. I had two surgeries to fix it. . . and neither, obviously, worked.
One other thing. . . if it's caught early enough, you only need a below the knee amputation, which can change very little as far as activity is concerned, although I wouldn't suggest climbing Mt. Everest. An above the knee amputation is an entirely different bag. It's not what you would want.
