My doctor told me if I gave up donuts, I'd live two years longer.
I said let me get this straight... YOUR way, I can't eat anymore donuts, AND I have to live without them for two extra years.
MY way... I get to eat donuts until I die! Easy choice!
LOL!
(Actually, that's not true, I straight up stole it from a comedian.)
I've always kind of felt like JamesJM said... there are people with celiac disease, which is not really an allergy as much as an inability to break down gluten... and there are people who are gluten intolerant, which is apparently NOT celiac disease but is still symptomatic. But a lot of people who are neither have decided they are better off without gluten, but I've seen no evidence that gluten is at all harmful unless you are celiac or intolerant. </shrug>
I've noticed the same thing Todd mentioned, that they will ask if it's a preference or an allergy. I always kind of hesitate, because it's not really an allergy... but definitely not a preference. But I don't want to go into all of that, so I just say "allergy". LOL!
