Its more to hide the seams than for structural support.. These are pretty small bits - can't remember the diameter, but right around a 1/16", or maybe even smaller.. so, doesn't take a lot to snap one.. I thought titanium bits would be tougher, but they're not.. So, I was looking around and found an old bit that was a teeny bit larger and a WHOLE lot more tough.. Got most of the holes drilled and got most of the screws put in..
The plexi isn't like wood - there's just about zero give in the holes you drill.. you know you can drill a pilot hole in wood and when you screw the larger screw in, it widens the hole in the wood.. plexi doesn't do that - at least not with weeny screws.. when you get to the point where you gotta put some oomph in the screwdriver to get it to bite into the plexi, it just doesn't wallow out and the screw head snaps off.. I guess I needed to drill slightly larger holes in it.. funny, the metal hole will widen to accept the screws, the plexi doesn't want to..
So, I still hafta drill out the screws that lost their heads, but all the other screws are installed.. unfortunately, like I mentioned, the ends of the trim are no longer meeting, now that they've been drilled in and, I guess, the metal, slightly warped.. So,I gotta either find metal corners, like you see on old trunks, or figure some other way to hide the corners.. I Spent a lot of time cutting those trim pieces exact - I guess I didn't know you gotta cut them a bit longer to accommodate being installed..
I did just mess around with the black light strips and tested them inside the board with the lights out.. with the lights out, it looks badazz.. Now I just gotta figure out how to install the strips.. they have sticky backing, but I want them inside the board facing out - meaning the sticky part isn't actually touching anything.. It would be easier to mount them on the outside of the board where they would just stick onto the outside of the plexi, but that wouldn't look near as cool, and we've come this far, already..
