Back when Smooth Jazz was the thing, there were smooth jazz stations in every major city and the radio stations would sponsor the concerts. We busted our butts to go to as many concerts as we could. When the radio stations died or changed their formats (and they ALL did), the concerts died as well. A shame, because this is the music I absolutely love above all others. We could probably still see some of these folks if we lived in a place like Chicago or San Diego where it seems they still play all the time. But, they stopped coming to St. Louis years ago and since we no longer travel, we miss out. I'd LOVE to see Gregg Karukas, Pieces of a Dream, and Candy Dulfer.
We don't go on smooth jazz cruises anymore either. We loved the four cruises we went on but travel is more of a hassle than we want to deal with now, and the cost of the cruises has gotten to be too much as well (about $8,000 for a week in a cabin with a veranda plus airfare). Our last cruise was in 2008, so we've been out of the loop for a long time. However, we still get newsletters from the company that produces the smooth jazz cruises (the guy who runs them is from St Louis). A few months ago, the newsletter announced that the Smooth Jazz Cruise was going to bring two concerts to town this summer. We couldn't buy tickets fast enough! The first one was last week: Marcus Miller, Bob James, and David Sanborn. They performed their grammy award-winning album Double Vision. It was WONDERFUL. The next one is in a couple of weeks at an outdoor ampitheater: Brian Culbertson, Tim Cunningham, Erin Bode, Eric Darius, Grace Kelly, Brian Culbertson. We'll be outside for about 6 hours so we're hoping we can withstand the heat enough to enjoy the music and are really looking forward to it. We've been in a music desert for far too long.
