The only thing I heard..

was that he was placing air tanks along the route, as backups, in case whoever was diving the route ran out of air.. While doing that, HE himself ran out of air, but I haven't found the actual details yet.. For a Seal to run out of air, I'm thinking there were multiple issues - either multiple mistakes or a combination of mistakes and equipment malfunction(s).. OR he possibly had a physical issue that caused him to black out..

Its possible his psi gauge was inaccurate and made him think he had more air than he did.. Its possible he got so busy he forgot to keep an eye on his psi gauge, or zero visibility kept him from seeing his gauge, but that would only happen if he was using an analog gauge.. surely he was using a computer that would have beeped like hell when he got down to 700-800 pounds of air - and then gone crazy as he got under 200 pounds..

Regulators are built so that if they malfunction, the valve will free flow air through the regulator - not close up and cut off the air supply to the diver.. Even if it did, he should have had an Octopus, which is a spare regulator on him.. So, if the regulator malfunctioned, his air could have run out quick while free flowing.. BUT.. as a Seal, I would have expected him to have had what is called a "Spare Air" tank on him.. Spare Air is a small emergency tank you can clip to your belt of BC (Buoyancy Control Device - vest) that gives you a few minutes of emergency air that would have gotten him back to one of his backup tanks..

For a Seal to have died by running out of air, he either completely miscalculated the air he'd need, didn't keep an eye on it, had a gauge or regulator malfunction, and didn't have a Spare Air or backup tank with him.. All are critical mistakes in cave diving - mistakes a Seal should not have made, even if he was not cave certified or experienced..

I believe they were gonna do an autopsy and that may give more answers as to whether it was a physical issue he had that caused the accident.. I'm kinda looking forward to hearing about that, myself..
