I'd like to field that question...

Howard Sackler originally wrote the speech, Carl Gottlieb (played the newspaper reporter) and Peter Benchley were supposed to rewrite it, but didn't, John Milius turned it into a huge speech, and finally, Robert Shaw condensed the huge speech into what he delivered in the film.. So, Robert Shaw actually did the final write on his brilliant speech..

..and if you'll remember, I sent you a link a while back explaining how Shaw did the full scene in two different takes: The first half where he's completely drunk, then the last half the next day when he was sober because he felt he could do the last half better sober..

Pretty sure the transition from drunk to sober is at the 2:00 mark here cuz the first two minutes his eyes are wet and he's slurring just a tad.. they brilliantly edited it to where you "hear" Quint tapping on the table, then go to the shot of seeing him tapping the table to make it more seamless..
