Rather than change the logo I can see them add 1 or 2 more official logos. Then, I hope they use merchandise sales to gauge fan acceptance and feature the logo that gets the most support.

I think you nailed it. This would be the easiest way out. Whatever merch doesn't sell, they can slowly phase it out. There's not a limit to how many logo's a team can have, is there?
