Flash back to the last press conference before the Raiders preseason game: which statement would you have liked McVay to deliver?
Option 1: "We're going to play our starters for 2 or 3 series. You look around the league, that's pretty much what every team does with their second preseason game. Heck, go back 5 or 10 years and that's almost universally what you see. They all do that for a reason -right? I mean this is just my second year as head coach - who am I to question the methods of all the great coaches who have come before me?"
Option 2: "We're not going to play or starters against Oakland. We've looked at all the available data and run countless scenarios and for this team, this season, this is the best course of action to get us where we want to go. We did it a little different last year, we might even change it up again next year. But for the 2018 Rams we, as an organization, see this as the best path to success. So we're doing it."
I'll start: give me Option 2 every time.
I think we heard
"everyone gives the starters work in the pre-season but this year game 2 is against our week 1 opponent so for this game we will make an exception and keep the starters out."Now how do I FEEL about that?
I dunno. I think what they did was use that game to give their young defenders and OL a lot of valuable work. And I am okay with that. But then...I also think that we see the starters at least in half of game 3 and quite possibly some in game 4.
