Season ending ACL tears

I don't have any numbers to back it up, but doesn't it seem like there are more and more ACL and MCL tears each year... both in regular season and pre-season? Why is that? Other than not having a player play, what can be done to prevent it? I saw a figure last week that stated at that time, there had been 8 season-ending ACL injuries during this pre-season. I know there have been a few more occur since that report.
