I think Garrapolo has Pro Bowl stuff. So what? So the press thinks he has it...so what?
Time is on the side of who proves to be great, good or just wishful thinking.
My focus is on Goff. And while we have optimism coming off a solid 2017, Goff has lots of areas where he needs to step it up.
While Goff threw for 3,800 yards, which is nothing really exceptional these days, we need to remember that over 20% of his yards came via Todd Gurley. I don't mean to say that it's alarming, but it does emphasize one of my areas of improvement I feel Goff needs to show in 2018.
Areas of improvement for Goff:
1) Needs to take the pacifier out and work more on his own on pre snap reads. Obviously, McVay plays a role with this element.
2) Needs to improve on his deep ball. I saw way too many underthrows. And, if Cooks is the burner we all love, he better get the ball deeper, and if he can't, get it out earlier. This is the area of improvement I referenced in my opening statement.
3) Needs to throw receivers open. Hopefully, a year of maturity at the position will improve his anticipation on the routes.
4) Needs to show more ability to throw into tight windows. This is an area where I think Carson Wentz is clearly better at this time and the great ones are all capable of doing.
5) Needs to not give up on his first read so quickly. I really think another year is going to help him with this one. I guess we call that patience.
6) Needs to be better managing the 2 minute offense. We kinda stunk at this last year. I'll give a lot of blame to McVay. Nonetheless, it needs improvement.
7) Needs to show he can be a comeback QB...win on that final drive. I'm not asking for Aaron Rodgers but great QBs just have it in them.
8) Needs to be, IMO, the MVP of this team. I think Gurley was that in 2017.
Now that the league has film on McVay's schemes, it will be incumbent on Goff to improve in many...all...of these areas.
I think he has it in him. And, if he does, I don't think we need to worry about Garrapolo talk.
