IMO? He always had the job security.
Here';s the reasoning.
First, you don't bring a GM in on a search if his his job security is in question. You don't want a GM in a head coaching search who has to factor self-interest into his considerations.
Second, they were never going to hire a new GM and a new head coach at the same time. That's just too much instability at once.
And of top of it, they would have just known that there was some talent on that roster.
MAYBE if both Goff and Gurley crashed and didn't work out they might have thought about replacing him in 2018.
