They came off a move, followed by a dismal 4-12 year that saw the HC canned in the middle of the season, followed by the sacking of the rest of the coaching staff with the exception of Fassel. Complete rebuild.
How long did that rebuild take?
I've seen many accused of wanting "instant results in this microwave society", etc. I also expected a rebuild to take a few years.
But here we have a team fighting for top dog in the NFC, with a substantially similar roster as last year with a few important tweaks. All in ONE offseason. Not even a regular season game. AN OFFSEASON ONLY.
This isn't about signing the praises of McVay, which is entirely warranted but that's for another thread. This post is about drawing a big, red, glittery circle around the guy still moving the chesspieces on the board: GM Les Snead. The fella who was an integral part of getting all the ingredients needed by McV to raise a phoenix out of the ashes of the worst offense in 2016, and instrumental (presumably) for landing McVay himself. And Goff (and the trade needed to move up.) And Gurley. Donald. And the FAs and UDFAs and lower-round gems like Hekker and Gaines (later used to land Watkins) and GZ Money. And so on and on and on. Snead's long background as a scout has prepared him for this job.
Yes, he's put a lot of stinkers in Horns, too, as happens on all teams from time to time. But if a player can be hindered by coaching, as we saw with Goff, can not a GM also be as hindered? Snead is a losing GM primarily because he's never had the opportunity to demonstrate his value through anybody other than Fisher. Getting Goff out from under Fisher has him at 7-2 this season, but getting Fisher off of Snead's shoulders has yielded him the same record for the year. So no, he won't be perfect and he'll make some bad calls, but now, finally, we'll get to judge Snead's acquisitions under a competent coach. And Snead's been throwing for over 100 passer rating, too!
Now let's go out this weekend and get the Rams to their first 8+ win season in 10 years.
