The game plan was to run the ball using a star running back against a team who has the #1 pass defense, but a considerably less proficient run defense.
The week before, Pittsburgh seemed to ignore the film and the stats and put the ball up 55 times! The outcome was predictable: 5 INT's and a lopsided loss to the Jags.
Rams stuck to the obvious proper strategy and won.
Fishball is not conservative: Fishball is playing not to lose. Fishball is hanging around until the 4th quarter, kicking a FG, and then holding on for dear life. Fishball is playing scared and believing that your own offense is the unit most likely to let you down.
McVay does NOT play Fishball, ever. He does not play not to lose; he plays to win.
Running the ball and less passing was the proper strategic balance against the Jags D. That might be conservative to some, but it is certainly not Fishball. Even being extra careful not to turn it over in the passing game was necessary because the Jag's pass D and their secondary is so darn good.
Fisher would play not to lose against Lompoc High. That's just his nature.
