Imagine if Fisher was still here? Scary thought.

This was apparent to many of us early last year. And it was apparent to Vermeil as well. That Fisher offensive staff was sinful.

There's 2 narratives. One blames Goff being behind entirely on the coaches. So they gather quotes from people who think the same thing.

The other narrative is that that covers up or glosses over or overlooks the extent to which Goff himself was just THAT far behind as a rookie and it doesn't matter where he went, he would still be behind.

Naturally what's happening is that people have their convictions about which narrative is "truer." Some say it's one, some say it's the other, some say both are true in different ways. I don't think anyone says it's neither thing but something else.

So there's a lot of I told you, and see it;s like I said, and so on.

My own view is that regardless of any other consideration, yes Goff was that far behind as a rookie, because of the college offense he came from. Which btw I was saying right after they drafted him. And my own view is that it's just acknowledging facts to account for that. In fact I say that McVay benefitted from getting ahold of Goff after he got over being a rookie. One example of that? Keenum had half the sack percentage Goff did behind the same OL. That's just how far behind Goff was at seeing and responding to blitzes pre-snap. The veteran CK could do that, the rookie JG couldn;t.

But as I said to a lot of folks it is ALL about coaching and nothing else so they don't see Goff as being especially far behind.

Interestingly enough, on my side, NFL execs DO see it my way. Fwiw (cause saying this is not going to resolve the debate).

Quote

“We did a lot of work on him when he and [Carson] Wentz came out, and I thought he had a chance,” a different offensive coordinator said. “I just knew that it was going to take a while.

“Man, he did not look the part when he played last year,” a former GM said of Goff. “I don’t know if it is coming from the spread [in college] and all that, but the anticipation, the instincts, they just weren’t there.

He had so much to learn to play in a pro system that he was just thinking not acting and pressing in the middle of it.

No one liked the Rams scheme last year but then the scheme was predicated on being able to run, and when they couldn't run the ball it was all mayhem from there. The problem with saying THAT is, there was also more than one reason they couldn't run the ball. Part of it was the OL, for sure, and part of it was Gurley himself. From what little we have seen of Gurley this year I would say he is fixing whatever ailed him last year and that yes absolutely a lot of the running game last year was on Gurley too.

So it goes. It's one of those debate issues where no one will ever win but there will always be strong opinions.
