They signed Wells and Long. They also picked up Smith Williams Turner Barksdale and several others.And of the latter pick-up types, all played better for the Rams than they did previously or since (though actually Barksdale did play as well since the Rams so he is the one exception. to that.)
What they DID do in that period was prioritize free agency as a method of line building.
And right now...so far anyway, that's what McVay has done too.
Needless to say, using free agency is a legit approach to line building. It was certainly a valid approach when Vermeil did---talking about signing not just Timmerman but also Gruttadauria, McCollum, and Nutten.
You may not prefer free agency as an approach to line building but there are teams throughout the last decade that have shown that yes it is a valid approach that can work.
