McVay wants an offensive coordinator who both (1) has experience as an OL coach, and (2) has previous experience as a coordinator.

Those qualifications do not lead to a long list of candidates.

There are a lot of reasons why you would want those 2 things in your coordinator, but one is that quite often, OL coaches are the run coordinators. So it looks to me like he wants a run-oriented OC. That I would imagine is to balance his own proficiency in the passing game. Since McVay's OC won't be calling plays anyway, this looks like a good idea.
