More often it's "hotel tax" or "sin tax"

States often do both of these..........and I'm ok with it.

In FL where I live if you book a hotel you pay sales tax of course.......PLUS a hotel tax.

Enough hotel rooms get rented here, and in other places, that it allows residents the luxury of not having state taxes.
