I honestly think part of it..

is all the media attention they get afterward.. If you're down in the dumps, have no hope for the future, are a chronic underachiever or whatever - getting non-stop national media attention on every channel may seem like a way out of loserville into the spotlight.. for all the wrong reasons, of course, but I'm thinking that doesn't even matter to them, anymore..
