You just named my favorite series ! What makes it special to me is that it all is shot and takes place in and around L.A., Hollywood, etc-places I'm well familiar with having grown up in the city. I highly recommend Michael Connelly's books (creator of the series) on detectives Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard. I'm finishing his "Dark Secret Night" and then will have read all his books that focus on Bosch and Ballard. Connelly is a former police reporter for the L.A. Times and knows the city and where all the bodies are buried. He is also very familiar with "cop talk" which is obvious if you read any of his books.
BTW: The character played by detective Ballard was inspired by a real detective in the Hollywood Homicide Division-Mitzi Roberts. She is still there.
As a side note the Bosch tv series is responsible for me going out and buying a good turntable for my old vinyls.
