You need 'practice'. Which is why I did a small bathroom before attempted my kitchen. Problem is: My family is split in how to do kitchen with chalk paint.
It's really amazing stuff... you can go 'light', 'medium', 'dark'. If over wood you can leave the grain look, you can cover it up.
Gloss... goes on very dull... I kind of like it.... but you can go quite glossy although NOT as glossy as enamel. I used a specil Polyurethane Water Based for Chalk paint... we're happy.
Ease... very easy, almost silly easy.. BUT.. not so much for me because it was my first time and I was experimented. If you ever use it you will probably have to experiment as well to find what you want... one color has about a zillion option like how many coats, how light a touch, how much shine if any.
Ok, back to the 'argument'... my wife and I like 'wood'... and going light you get very near what a varnish looks like... almost precisely... my kids, grandkids, don't like it, "It's old fashioned".
Of all the brands there is only one other brand that has a color anywhere near what we want... so I'll get it, do another small bathroom... choose between the two bathrooms and paint the Kitchen that color. Which brings up... and I think I mentioned this... the WORST thing about Chalk Paint is VERY FEW color options. - JamesJM
