correct me here if I'm in error. But in metal I'm not aware of a single 'known' drummer that does NOT use matched grip. The reason simple - Power.
In the more rock and pop genre it's not common, but I wouldn't call it rare.
I have read that conventional, or traditional, allows for more nuance... something not really used in hard rock or metal bands because you can't really hear it anyway.. with the volume of the guitars.
True? I tend to believe so, but I'm not sure. One of my all time favorites is Dave Garabaldi who uses ghost notes more than any other drummer I've ever known... (part of nuance)... yet plays matched grip. But the genre of Dave's music allows for it... far less 'power', or I shouldn't say 'power' but rather 'volume'. - JamesJM
