That may be because the bull pens were no where as skilled as they are today. Its only smart when you can bring in a set up guy and then the closer when they both are throwing near 100 mph. And don't get me started as to WHY I think so many pitchers are throwing close to if not faster than 100 mph.

Would be interested in hearing your theory, W.

Not sure if you saw the game last night, a 1 - 0 pitchers' duel, with the Cubs beating my Giants. Aroldis Chapman, who may be the fastest relief pitcher in baseball, was throwing pitch after pitch at 100 or above to close out the game. He hit 103 several times. He came in for Lester. Cueto, for the Giants, had a great game, until he gave up a homer. But the Giants just didn't offer any run support for him.

I can remember my days playing baseball as a kid, and just can't imagine how anyone could hit triple digits pitching. MLB hitters do, of course. But, sheesh. I don't know how they do it . . . Their hand/eye coordination, plus bat speed, must be off the charts when they do connect.
