How do I fertilize my lawn with pets

My lawns needs to be fertilized to knock out the crabgrass and build, but I am worried about my pets walking through it and licking their paws, etc. and exposing themselves to chemicals. Any tips or tricks, thanks

Yeah.. we use Permagreen and same results..
