Totally agree. My guess is shutting him down for the year happened collaboratively with him with an eye on next year. I think he'll come back strong for 2023 and then perhaps walk away after that. The Rams save a bunch of 2024 cap money if he retires then. His base salary then is not guaranteed and he has a good chunk of bonus money only if he's on the roster at the beginning of the league year.
If he does want to play an 11th and final season in 2024, yeah, I could see him wanting to play in Pittsburgh. I think odds he plays beyond that (in 2025) are basically zero.
