Harris was nearing Brown’s all time rushing yards record and Brown thought Harris was soft. Particularly Brown frowned upon Harris’ running out of bounds whereas Brown would stay in bounds and run into and over people. Brown threatened to come out of retirement at the age of 42 and play for the Raiders just to keep Harris from beating his record.
Jim Brown is my favorite running back of all time. He could do it all: elusive, fast, big powerful and loved to run over people. He was 6’2”, 230 and had a ridiculously svelt 31” waist line.
However, his competition was way weaker than Harris’, or Campbell’ and especially Bo Jackson’s.
I’ve seen Harris run over people plenty of times. At 6’2”, 225 and I’m guessing a 4.5 40, he was every bit of a freak as Brown.
But ultimately Brown’s mentality was not Franco’s because Brown wasn’t just content with outmatching you, he wanted to deliver a painful message too.
