If McVay comes back—if—he needs to relinquish call duty. I think he’s a great head coach. I think he was a great offensive coordinator for 3 of his head coaching seasons. I think he caused an evolution that swung the pendulum back from passing and dink and dunk back to rushing and an open passing game.
I don’t think McVay knows how to grapple with the monster he created.
Most of us grew up watching Footballs Greatest Hits—Jack Tatum or Lawrence Taylor lighting people up. The game of football McVay grew up playing protected players, so he doesn’t have first hand experience of what getting lit up does to your resolve to play.
However, he clearly has a talent for communication and player loyalty which is rare and what a head coach needs.
I think he needs to clean house and get some experienced, older coaches back in his fold.
He had great innovative ideas, but he’s maxed out that card.
