Somewhere I read that a college coach saw Akers as one who loafed on plays where he wasn't involved, among other thingd that he listed. He stated flatly in all his years of experience that he'd never seen a player with the combination of traits that he listed in Akers go beyond a certain level, regardless of talent or potential.
We can generalize about "me first" players, but some of them make it big - Tom Brady and Randy Moss come to mind.
But this coach was more specific and he nailed it regarding Akers and players like him, identifying specifics that we have difficulty pinpointing from the outside. I believe his comments were deep in a Twitter feed somewhere that I got lost in, and I'm not going back because I have a column to write before deadline, leaves to rake, and an afternoon outdoors in the clean autumn aiir down by the river with my fly rod to enjoy. So I'm not going to research or report further on Akers.
In my view McVay was right to hold him out, or let him sit, for this last game. Henderson and Rivers showed me more heart (albeit on highlight squibs) than Akers has - ever. They obviously came to play football, not show off. Dump him, pick up a piece of change for him if you find a suitor who doesn't consider him damaged goods, and for us on the board, probably time to quit speculating what we could get for him. He's had his chances and, unfortunately, has shown out.
For what it's worth - yours to consider.
