Re: Where have all of the Rams explosive plays gone?

The article misses two salient points: One, (as was demonstrated on the second video) when the pocket collapses, Stafford has to get rid of the ball quick. Two, if the defense is playing (however configured) to rush the passer and cover deep routes, effective running plays cah succeed for more yards than checkdown passes close to the line of scrimmage.

In other words, solid O line play in the passing game, and the presence of a running game that is a threat to gain yardage (as we all know - sorry for preaching to the choir) are what is lacking more than another body at the wide receiver positions.

It'd be nice, sure, to have a speedy little wideout there as a threat - but if nobody believes the run threat, as opposed to having to bring a safety up or keep 1 - 2 linebackers home to cover it, and if the QB doesn't have close to 3 seconds to wait for the play to develop, what's the point?

As-is, I see that speedy little wideout as wasted space. Second and two at your own thirty, whatcha gonna do, if you don't have a back and blocking that can get you that yardage on third, and can't contain the rush long enough for that speedy little wideout to get downfield?
