McVay had a great running game in '17 and '18

The prime of Gurley's career was something to see. Chunk plays, working the clock. It's not McVay's fault that Gurley's clock struck midnight after the Dallas game (he was kind of the reason they won that game along with CJ anderson as I recall. Passing game was held in check a bit). So it's not scheme, it's talent. And don't forget Gurley was a big dude. Not the short and light rb's we have now. Gurley could catch really well too. Double threat. Probably why Goff had so much success. When defenses are scheming to stop Gurley, it opens up the field for passing. Play action, anyone? Makes you appreciate just how good Stafford is. Defenses are scheming to stop him. that's it. You think they're worried about Cam Akers breaking a big one or grinding them up?

Until we get an elite back or even a very good back then we'll probably have a mediocre running game. Really good backs don't have to come in the first round. Many come from later rounds. Sometimes you just get lucky. Maybe we should draft one next year. Hopefully a bigger back. Wouldn't that be something?

Even in a Super Bowl winning season, last year, our run game was so so.
