It's not because we win the coint toss, it's because we defer.

Second half carries more weight and if you survive the first half, you're ahead because you get the ball first in the second half and are already warmed up and there are more possessions available because of the rules in the last 5 minutes, the 2 minute warning, and time outs, etc..
