Sounds great at first but here's why it wouldn't work....suppose there's an 11-win team in the AFC that didn't get in and an NFC wildcard that did at 9-8. Now suppose the 9-8 team loses by 35 points to a team the 11-5 team beat that year. Once something like that happened, everyone would want to return to the old way.
