This is what I've seen. Whether it's the same as what they were dong last year under Staley, it's not working now. Against GB, there were shots of Ramsey looking frustrated at being taken off of Adams and I agree. With what we've got, it makes the most sense to me that we use Ramsey to shut down the opposition's top receiver. At least with a team like GB where their top guy dominates looks.

I assume they don't take this approach because of weaknesses in other areas of our secondary but the way we've been doing it neutralizes Ramsey. It isn't ideal but I'd much rather an opponent beat us with their 3rd or 4th receiving options and at least take away the primary threat.

Of course, the design of the pass coverage has looked like a prevent defense all year to my eye so I don't really know what they're trying to accomplish. I can't imagine that it is their intent to be so passive but they have not strayed from it all year so it's hard to give them any benefit of doubt. But IMO all the problems on defense start with that passivity. Because they are essentially giving the opposition quick completions by design, there is no opportunity to utilize our strength...well, our supposed strength in the DL.

But I think our DL may also not be what it was. Getting massive pressure with just 4 rushers looks to be a thing of the past. They are going to have to be more creative and scheme some pressure. Donald just isn't able to blow up OL's like he used to. Maybe that's the reality? That Donald was at such an elite level that it made Staley's defense seem good when it actually wasn't. Regardless of that, asking Morris to try and emulate Staley is not working. I don't think Morris has ever done anything as a defensive coach but they either need to let him do his own thing or get rid of him. He is not Staley and won't be resembling him any time soon.
