I am wondering which NFL team says to their young QB, "You are good but not great" you are worth 15 mill a year and draw a hard line in the sand. Hell even put it out in the media, we want Baker back but at half the Mahohomes deal. Not to start a blog-riot, "I would have been ok with Goff at 10 million a year because we could have surrounded him with talent.
I understand and somewhat agree with the philosophy but as hard as it is to hit on one good QB, how hard is it to hit on 10 other good players to support an average one?
I'm reminded of the old saying, you can't move away from your problems. Most of the time, you're going to make the same mistakes no matter which new city you move to. You can surround a QB with more talent but his shortcomings are going to remain. Realistically, how often can a coach set up a team that is so dominant that a QB has a clean pocket and obvious receivers to throw to most of the time and in crunch situations?
Look at Sam Darnold. I had hoped that he'd exorcized some demons by going to Carolina and not being the focus of the offense or saddled with high draft pick expectations. But just 6 games in, he is back to being one of the worst rated QB in the league. His 79 rating very close to his career Jets rating of 78. Goff is much the same. Since 2018, Goff's rating with the Rams was 88. After 6 games with the Lions, he's at 87.
